California moves to demolish three Capitol Mall buildings, studies Sacramento State campus
The California Department of General Services is moving to tear down three mostly empty office buildings on Capitol Mall, and its environmental report studies a Sacramento State campus with 1,250 apartments that could replace them.
The draft environmental impact report opens a 45-day public comment period that runs from Monday, Oct. 26, through Dec. 10. The department's director will decide whether to approve the demolition after the environmental review process is complete.
Demolition would go ahead whether or not Sacramento State takes over the land, the report says. The department has given the university exclusive rights to study the site but has not formally committed to handing it over, and any campus plan would need its own environmental review once it is drawn up.
