New aerials show progress at Westacre Park and Heritage Oaks Park in West Sacramento
Drivers passing by Westacre Park or Heritage Oaks Park in West Sacramento lately have likely noticed the construction fencing, heavy machinery, and steady construction activity. New aerials captured April 20 offer a closer look at how work is progressing at both sites.
Summer is looking promising for residents near Westacre Park. The 12-acre site, formerly part of the Westacre Elementary School, closed for construction in March last year. Today, the park is on track for its grand opening this spring.
The project is bringing a long list of new amenities to the site, including a skate park and pump track. Eager skaters, however, will have to wait a bit longer. The city has explicitly asked the public to stay outside the fences as crews work through the final touches. The park also features a playground, futsal and pickleball courts, a restroom building, and reflexology and meditation paths.
The project has been fully funded with $7.8 million from Proposition 68’s Statewide Park Program.

Three miles to the south, the $7.8 million Heritage Oaks Park along Lake Washington Boulevard is still in the early stages, but progress has been steady since breaking ground in August last year. The city website shows the park is scheduled to open to visitors in the fall of this year.
Design plans for the 9-acre site balance active recreation with natural preservation, threading new walking paths and fitness stations through the site's preserved grove of heritage oaks. The park will feature a nature-themed play area, an interactive water feature, a bike-focused riding area, along with a new plaza, picnic spaces, a restroom building, and expanded parking.
While much of Heritage Oaks remains under construction, Emile’s Cafe is already open near the park entrance and serving during construction. Operated by the family behind Whitey’s Jolly Kone, the cafe offers coffee and espresso drinks, breakfast and lunch items, sandwiches, and soft-serve ice cream, with plans to eventually add beer and wine in the evening.
Imagecon Inc. received the construction contract at just over $4.1 million. The project also includes a $3.1 million federal grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, along with support from the city’s Park Impact Fund.
